Good Things Good People – Part 2

I know I have wrote on this topic before, but I do feel it is something very important and often over looked.  So I am going to write about it again.

Have you ever heard the saying “Good things happen to good people”? Would you consider yourself a “good person” and wonder why good things don’t seem to happen to you? A few months back I was wondering this very question. I consider myself to be a good person with a good heart and it seemed like I was getting nowhere. I was extremely lonely, work wasn’t going so well, and it was just hard to find that one thing that would put a real smile on my face. Then one day the answer came to me and it was so simple, it was this: If you want good things to happen in your life, you have to go out and do good things. You can’t just sit there and say, “I’m a good person”, you have to go out and BE a good person.

So these last few months I have been focusing on just that. Being a good person. Helping out others when I can. I just signed up to help out with a local charity drive that one of the places I work is helping out with. I have designed a website for a local church (a non-Catholic church) for a very low price, nearly free. I will be design them a sign for the front of their building as well. At my other job, I am working on getting a food drive started and in December we will be having a fund raiser for two groups that help with organ donations which I will be a part of. These are just some of the examples of things I have been up too recently to help make this world just a little better place to live and focusing on becoming that “good person” good things happen too.

I don’t list these things to brag about what I have been up too. I just want to share with others that it is important to give back and do as much good as you can in this world. I just wanted to show that one can make a difference without having a lot of money to donate or being able to purchase things for others. Volunteering one’s time can be so rewarding and can also be a huge help to your community.

I would like to encourage anyone that reads this posting to do one kind act today. Maybe it just holding a door for an elderly lady or saying hi to a stranger on the streets. You will be surprised how your life changes when you are living a more positive life. Helping others does make you feel much better about yourself and it does have a positive effect on one’s life. What I am trying to say is this, if you are one of those people that say you are a good person, do something helpful weekly that you normally wouldn’t do for someone else. You may not notice the change right away, but I’m pretty confident you will notice that you are happier. You will notice that good things are happening in your life. And the next time you say or think “Good things happen to good people” you will be able to see the results in your own life and the lives of those you have helped.

This quote I think is just so appropriate for this posting and it is something I hope to be true for me.

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’ ~ Erma bombeck

Feel free to post as a comment something you have done this week that has made a positive difference in someone else’s life. I always like to hear about people doing good deeds.

One Response to Good Things Good People – Part 2

  1. Mikey says:

I know some people who are miserable, and if you ask them “what have you been up to?” they says “nothing” We reap what we sow, we’re responsible for ourselves; of course, life has challenges and it’s not always easy, but attitude is what shape our life, being active in the community uplift our mood, and we meet new people along the way.

It could be step by step, it doesn’t have to be big thing, but when it’s done with love, the richness of that small gesture of help, goes a long way.

Sometime I tell a construction guy “you’re doing a good job” thumb up.

Praying is the same thing; it has the power to change the course of our history, because it’s that powerful. But how many people have said “I’m a good person, I don’t need to pray” (I’ve heard that often in my own family) I think it’s unfortunate, because then not much will change in their life.

But you’re right, being involved a bit in the community is a great way to BE a good person, and not just sitting on our ass.
